Today, India operates the world's largest synchronous grid covering an area of 3.28 million sq km with an installed capacity of 258 GW (as on 31st January 2015) and about 200 million consumers. Indian Power Sector is largely dominated by government owned utilities (Central and States - 29 states and 7 union territories own majority of the power utilities), the private sector's role is about 27 per cent in generation, less than 1 per cent in transmission and about 5 per cent in distribution. While the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has jurisdiction over inter-state matters, State Regulatory Commissions (SERCs) have jurisdiction on intra-state matters. Some smaller states have opted for Joint ERCs.
